CLAPTONE:

By now we all know that 2012AD proved to be a year dominated by Claptone’s infectious ‘Cream’ track. It became an immediate hit, topping new world charts at Beatport and RA. In 2013 his shamanistic sonic powers really took him everywhere – the mystical figure played 200 shows in 130 cities on 6 different continents. Hot productions to bleed from this shadowy one’s lair include ‘No Eyes’ and ‘Wrong’ which both topped Beatport charts, got played by everyone, were ubiquitous across Ibiza all summer and also picked up plenty of Radio 1 plays from Pete Tong and Annie Mac. But that’s not all, because remixes of the Pet Shop Boys, The Magician and George Morel’s classic house tune ‘Let’s Groove’ also managed to capture audiences under their spell.

As for 2014AD, already it has been a whirlwind ride for this avian form as he released ‘Ghost feat. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’ and ‘United’, which made #1 in the Beatport Deep House Release Charts. Remixes of the late great Romanthony as well as Klaxons have also got the world hot under their collar and soon they are to be treated to the wondrous thing that will be his debut album. Featuring lots of fantastic collaborations with renowned singers, it is sure to be a fine artistic statement that sums up exactly what this strange figure is all about.

Deep and woozy, the Claptone sound pairs theatre with tragedy, feel good vibes with acute melancholia and imbues each groove with a Rhodes laced funk, an organic string hook and myriad earthy elements. Up to the present day, Claptone releases have been birthed on Germany’s influential Exploited label but who or whatever Claptone is, it is alive, with a life of its own, evolving and revolving in equal measure, exploring new sounds naturally and forever taking inspiration from long gone and occult worlds.

SkyliteDC presents | House Rituals feat. FEDERICO SCAVO | Toro Toro | Thursday, September 24, 2015

Skylite DC Presents

::HOUSE RITUALS featuring FEDERICO SCAVO::

Heather Femia

Welcome to a brand new concept. A concept that dates back to the true origins of house music. We are proud to present an evening that encompasses the world of house music as we know it, from its very start. House Ritual Thursdays at Toro Toro will feature some of the most prolific and proficient house music Producers/DJ’s that spin the music at its truest core, and not fall victim to its sub-genre’s, but rather, have redefined it with their touch. We hope you enjoy this new musical journey at the nations capitol as much as we have putting it together.

FEDERICO SCAVO:

Few names have stood the test of time in House music like Federico Scavo. The resurgence of House music in recent years has spawned a new generation of names that have moved aside many legends, but Federico is one of those rare talents that is just as relevant and exciting now as he was when the genre was nothing more than a baby. Over his career, he’s twisted and refined his sound through Tech, Electro, Funky, Deep and Tribal formats, never losing the ‘Scavo Sound’ – but consistently remaining one of the front-runners for new innovation and ideas as House music has developed.

In the booth – Federico is an imposing act – a master of his craft with an extensive knowledge and depth to his musical library that’s incomparable to any other DJ in the business. Decades spent refining his style and gathering the experience needed to be truly world class has resulted in something special – every Federico Scavo show is stuffed with a diversity and character that’s unmistakably his own. Federico’s tour schedule is never-ending and full of the most prominent names in House music. His journeys have taken him to Ultra Music Festival Miami, Ministry of Sound London, Footwork Toronto, Ruby Skye San Francisco, Ku De Ta Bali, Dragon-i Hong Kong, Pepper Club Shenzen, Cavo Paradiso Mykonos, Carpe Diem Croatia, Alsina Buenos Aires, Lollipop Tirana, Nikki Beach Miami, Waterland Festival Helsinki and hundreds of venues in-between. Still finding the time to hold down a residency at Wall in Miami, Florida – Federico’s work as a DJ is never done.

In the studio, Federico has worked his way through a discography that’s seen his consistently chart-topping releases showcased on the likes of Ultra, Toolroom, Spinnin, Tiger, Great Stuff, X Records, Pacha, Hotfingers, Ego, Azuli and just about every major authority in the world of House music. No less than twenty plus years deep into his journey through the music he knows, loves and now leads – the Federico Scavo sound is still setting the levels for the newer generations of House music. Keeping at the top of this game takes more than just hard work and talent, but whatever the formula is – Federico’s still taking down number one spots on the likes of Beatport and iTunes – a testament to his class and an example for any aspiring DJ/Producer.

Born close to Florence, Italy – Federico’s surroundings were rich in culture and art, undoubtedly an influence towards his artistic development. Hardworking and driven in his infancy – a budding Federico Scavo took to music at a young age and made an informed decision at an early stage that music would be a world he’d devote his life to. Through years of early development, it was as New System that Federico first tasted true success as a musician. Inspired by the electronic music of the early nineties and a life surrounded by music of all forms, the Italo sound was the dominant style of the time and in 1994 ‘This Is The Night’ shot to international recognition achieving platinum status in Canada, racking up over 400,000 sales and clarifying Federico’s belief that there was a life and career for him in creating music. New System enjoyed a year of success on the back of their hit with X-Energy Records but it was the underground that was calling for Federico, who made sure even his commercially successful releases were packaged with ‘Underground’ and ‘Tribal’ versions – proof that right from the start his heart was with the underground from day one.

Following his success with New System – several years of refinements and experimentation saw Federico establish himself as not just a songwriter, but also a fully qualified and technically sound producer with a total understanding of his craft. In 2002 Hot Coffee presents Pink Coffee released one of the year’s breakthrough tracks ‘Another Brick In The Wall’ – an accurate modernisation of the Pink Floyd classic that was approved by Roger Waters and beamed around the world via MTV and the multitude of DJs that had the track in their top selections of the year. Federico’s successes as a producer and DJ naturally steered him towards other areas of the industry, most notably as a label owner. In 2004 Coffee Killer and Shibusa Records were launched and artistically directed by Scavo, with both labels enjoying many years of consistent releases that ensured the underground was well stocked with the best in new and innovative House music. Bringing through new talents and sounds has always been a duty that comes with success and is one that Federico takes seriously. His Area 94 imprint has become a hotbed for the best in organic House music since its inception in 2007 and boasts over one hundred releases that have helped to break through the likes of Josh Feedblack, Giacomo Tosi and Luca Guerrieri, whilst also calling on some of Federico’s most infamous associates including Alex Kenji, Crazibiza and Phunk Investigation to name but a handful.

Through the digitalisation of Electronic music over the last ten years – Federico has remained at the forefront of the global House movement, ensuring his status, as a kingpin in the industry is a permanent fixture. With 2014 already boasting releases with the likes of Toolroom, D:Vision and Tiger Records – the work rate never ceases and why would it? Federico is still on top of the world working a relentless international diary of DJ shows and educating the new generations of underground House music with his hypnotic and captivating shows and productions. The stars of tomorrow will continue to emerge, but the beauty of House music is in the respect and understanding of the importance of its roots – something Federico is unmistakably a focal contributor to.

Sian “Anthracite” Album Tour with Ashwin Khosa

  • Sian ( Octopus Recordings | Barcelona )
  • Ashwin Khosa ( Trapez | BKLYN )
  • Oliver Caine ( Hidden Recordings )

Flash & Verboten combine to present the return of Octopus Recordings head honcho Sian, touting his latest LP “Anthracite” out August 3rd. A night of groovy, submarine techno house awaits with Traum MBF’s Ashwin Khosa alongside. Trev-ski‘s Audio Zen premiers in the bar featuring Alex Gardel, Graham Hatke and himself.

Classic modern techno is exactly what Sian and his label Octopus represent. When you have interests ranging from entomology, cosmology and marine biology, to the social impact of the rave generation, you tend to make unusual art. Sian stands out as a little more bohemian than the average electronic talent.

Born in Dublin, Ireland and raised in southern Spain, he chose early to drop out of normal society and engage in the extraordinary. Adhering more to the avant-garde side of club culture, his tracks show an otherworldly, slow and hypnotic slant on big speaker electronic music. Having quickly developed an oeuvre of work that appeared on stalwart labels like Soma, Pokerflat, Bedrock and Aus before starting his own imprint, he has been reworked along the way by talent like Steve Bug, Pan-Pot, Carlo Lio, Nicole Moudaber, Efdemin and Minilogue.

Whether conducting everlasting sweat soaked DJ sessions or creating timeless dance music, Sian is a truly diverse and original talent. At once chic and debonaire, but always intensely inventive. We look forward to an evening of high-energy, cutting-edge techno with Sian.

SkyliteDC presents | House Rituals feat. STONEBRIDGE | Toro Toro | Thursday, September 3rd, 2015

::HOUSE RITUALS featuring STONEBRIDGE::

STONEBRIDGE:

Since tapping into the musical mainstream with his remix work for artists such as Borgeous, Sia, Jason Derulo, Icona Pop, Taio Cruz and Ne-Yo, Grammy Award nominated producer and DJ StoneBridge has not slowed down. StoneBridge has taken his unique brand of sexy, groove-ladled house to crowds throughout the world. His DJ travels have encompassed top bill performances at stages from Australia’s Future Music Festival to Womb in Tokyo, while being a regular guest at clubs like London’s Ministry of Sound and Bleu in Detroit.

In his early days, StoneBridge created Sweden’s first DJ/Remix company, SweMix. He turned a basement operation into a hugely successful record label and brand. The label was responsible for worldwide hits like Robin S ‘Show Me Love’ (StoneBridge Remix), and the Remix that got StoneBridge his Grammy Nomination, Ne-Yo ‘Closer’ (StoneBridge Remix). Then in 2012 StoneBridge received a BMI Songwriter of the year award as co-writer of Jason Derulo’s ‘Don’t Wanna Go Home’.

His prolific musical output has led to three studio albums. StoneBridge’s debut LP came in 2004 with the arrival of ‘Can’t Get Enough’, which garnered international acclaim among clubbers and the world’s music press. The album went on to sell over 60.000 copies and spawned undoubtedly two of StoneBridge’s biggest singles to date; ‘Put ‘Em High’ and ‘Take Me Away’, which both scored UK Top 10 chart positions.

He then returned to the studio to complete the next album, ‘Music Takes Me’, which featured massive hits like ‘SOS’, ‘You Don’t Know’ and ‘Close To Heaven’.

His third artist album, ‘The Morning After’, released in 2010, was regarded by StoneBridge as his “musical chef d’oeuvre”. The title track and second single from the album ‘Trip’en’ saw StoneBridge maintain his form for success with a slew of DJ and radio support.

In 2014 StoneBridge released the two hit singles that received Grammy consideration- ‘Be Kind’, (StoneBridge & Crystal Waters), and ‘You Can Have It All’ (StoneBridge, Luv Gunz & Koko LaRoo). Both are big hits on Spotify and have been supported by top DJs and radio stations worldwide. A new remix package of ‘Put ‘Em High’ and ‘Take Me Away’ saw the light on HK Records resulting in another Beatport Top 10.

With his music regularly chalking up playlist support on radio networks such as BBC Radio 1, Sirius XM and Kiss FM, StoneBridge’s presence on the airwaves is familiar. This led to StoneBridge hosting his own weekly three-hour mix show on Sirius XM/BPM broadcasting to millions every Saturday throughout North America as well as a weekly guest mix for Hed Kandi Japan.

As a resident at Sirius XM/BPM with his show Epic Mix with StoneBridge, his name has become synonymous with Saturday night dance music.

In addition to his busy studio, radio and touring commitments, StoneBridge also runs his own record label Stoney Boy Music, established in 1997 and boasts early releases from future stars Axwell, Eric Prydz, and Robbie Rivera, and the highly acclaimed sub label Dirty Harry Records, which launched in 2014.

“Epic Mix with StoneBridge” airs every Saturday on Sirius XM/BPM 9pm – 12am (EST) throughout North America. StoneBridge can also be heard weekly in Japan on Hed Kandi Japan.

If you were to get out a map and track the history of house music – with endless lines sprouting from New York, Chicago and Detroit to points all over the world – you’d have to make a big, red circle around Miami, Florida, and start drawing.
Miami was never ground zero to a full-fledged subcultural movement. But it is where Oscar Gaetan, better known as Oscar G, has lived every day of his life. And that fact alone makes it a hub on the global underground.
An award-winning songwriter, producer, and DJ, Oscar is one of dance music’s brightest and most enduring stars. As part of seminal production teams Liberty City, Murk, and Funky Green Dogs, he boasts hits – Billboard chart-toppers as well as underground smashes – in every decade, every trend, and every market. “Some Lovin’,” “Fired Up,” and “Dark Beat” are more than just tracks: They are moments, shared by clubbers worldwide. They’re the kind of moments Oscar still creates at Space Miami, his hometown superclub, where he’s been a resident DJ for a staggering eight years – coming full circle after a globetrotting career.
Oscar and longtime friend and production partner Ralph Falcon grew up in a Miami enlivened by the fresh spirit of hip-hop. “Break dancing, graffiti and the music that went along with it: That’s really what got me into DJ-ing in the first place,” he says. By the age of 12, he was already spinning at school dances.

Oscar and Ralph started working together at the end of high school, blending the sounds of their youth with the beginnings of house, like Ten City and Blaze; and the darker Euro bands of the time, like Depeche Mode and New Order. “We were always big on doing our own sound, with our own feeling and vibe in every aspect of it; from the way we mixed things to the sounds we chose,” says Oscar. “I remember being obsessed with that for years, and then people started to listen.”
The early years bore some of the work for which they’re still best known, like often imitated, never duplicated vocals “Some Lovin’,” “If You Really Love Someone,” and “Reach For Me” (Tribal). Upon their release in 1993, the pair became instant superstars. “Europe kind of grabbed us,” says Oscar, so they spent a good amount of time touring overseas, eventually visiting every major and minor outpost of the global dance scene, including Zouk Singapore, Ministry Of Sound London, and Stereo Montreal.

“Fired Up!” (Twisted), their biggest hit ever, followed in 1996. It topped the Billboard Dance chart, and even cracked the Top 100, peaking at No. 80. They would go on to remix countless major pop artists, from Madonna to Cher to Donna Summer; and appear on mainstream outlets like MTV and Top Of The Pops. The boys also cut two complete Funky Green Dogs albums for major label MCA, “Star” (1999) and “Super California” (2001). But their own measures of success were still decidedly underground: “Once Junior Vasquez played our records at Sound Factory [in New York], we felt like we could retire, and at that point we were like 20,” says Oscar.
In March 2000, Space opened in downtown Miami with Oscar as the Saturday night resident, just as the world was paying its annual visit for Winter Music Conference. The club – with its cavernous main room, pummeling German sound system and nitrogen blasts – was the talk of dance world, and the legend of Oscar’s residency began to grow.

The year 2003 was a big one. Oscar released the “Live @ Space” (Star 69) compilation, and won the Club World Award for “Best Resident DJ” (which he won again in 2007). Murk set a new Billboard Dance chart record, with five No. 1’s in a single year: Four singles from their self-titled artist album on Tommy Boy Records, and “Dark Beat” (Twisted), tribal house’s first real vocal anthem, which found its way from dance floors onto mainstream radio. “We came up with ‘Dark Beat’ in about 15 minutes. Whenever things come that quickly, you know there’s something to them,” says Oscar. “But we didn’t think radio or anthem; we were thinking more like, ‘Oh man, Danny Tenaglia’s gonna be all over this!’”
In 2006, Oscar became one of Pacha New York’s only non-NY-based monthly residents, strengthening his bond with his home-away-from-home, and its rich dance history. He released a second installment in the Space series in 2007, starting new relationships with Nervous Records in the U.S. and CR2 in the U.K. CR2 also snapped up the Murk catalog, and commissioned new remixes of the classic tracks, including Paul Woolford’s takes on “If You Really Love Someone” and “Reach For Me.” And in 2008, after nearly two decades making music, Oscar released out his first solo album, “Innov8” (Nervous).
Even though his passion for music creation is undeniable, it’s in his DJ booth where Oscar feels most at home. “On the music side, I’ve felt pretty energized lately, because the changes in the industry really enable you to be a lot more experimental and take more chances,” he says. “But DJ-ing to me always comes first: I really believe in it as an art form. Having a residency like Space, with a regular crowd, it’s the ultimate.”

Thank you so much for helping to show off this beautiful DC house music scene. Can’t wait to do it again and again and again!
