Echostage’s owners are opening a much smaller club on K Street

Sometimes, bar and nightclub owners spend months or years looking for the perfect spot for their new concept. Other times, they find it right under their nose.Antonis Karagounis, the owner of Echostage, was walking to his office on K Street NW in January when he noticed U.S. Marshals “taking everything out of [Lotus Lounge],” a subterranean nightclub near the corner of 14th and K streets. Lotus had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2014 and owed more than $1 million in back taxes, according to the Washington Business Journal, so the eviction wasn’t a surprise. But Karagounis saw an opportunity.

He and his partners, who also run the nearby Josephine and Barcode, “had been looking for a smaller venue for us to be able to do the up and coming DJs – techno, deep house, DJs that are a little more underground that cannot fill up Echostage,” Karagounis says. Echostage is one of the largest venues in Washington, with room for up to 6,000 clubbers, so it’s too big for the “experimental” DJs Karagounis wants to book for sets at the long-running weekend Glow party. But the former Lotus, with room for around 300 customers, is just the right size. “So I called the landlord,” Karagounis explains, chuckling. “It was pretty easy, actually.”

After months of renovation, the new spot, dubbed Soundcheck, will open to the public on Aug. 12. Karagounis says the goal of the “minimalist” space, outfitted with LED walls and video projectors, light fixtures to project lasers over the dance floors, and a pair of giant disco balls. “I want to mix the old and the new,” he says, “the disco feel of the ’80s and ’90s when I started going clubbing.” Karagounis has a long history in D.C. nightspots, having promoted at legendary spots like the Spy Club and Zei Club in the 1990s, and worries the new generation, weaned on superclubs and day-long EDM festivals, is missing out. That, he says, is why he decided to “bring it to people who never experienced the old-school clubbing, the darker look and the crazy lights.”

In a phone interview, Karagounis keeps coming back to the state-of-the-art d&b audiotechnik Y-series speakers, installed by the same team behind Echostage’s sound system, and the system of honeycombed acoustic panels on the walls and ceiling, and the reinforced cork floor. “It was built like a recording studio,” he says. “It sounds a little technical, but everything was done to enhance the sound.”

The calendar for Soundcheck is beginning to fill up: Wednesdays will be handled by the Steez Promo, the EDM promoters who’ve organized Baltimore’s Moonrise Festival as well as shows at the 9:30 Club. Thursdays will be Glow Thursdays, a long-running event now being staged at sister nightclub Ultrabar, featuring techno and house DJs. Paris Blohm (Sept. 3) and Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano (Oct. 1) are among the names already booked; James and Marciano were among the first artists to play at Echostage back in 2012. Sunday’s Afterglow offers a chance to hear the legendary Pete Tong (Sept. 27) and deep techno whiz Paul Ritch (Sept. 20) in intimate surroundings.

Eventually, Friday night will become a Latin and international night, while Saturday will focus on hip-hop, but those details are still being worked out. Also to come is the return of College Tuesdays, an 18-and-over night previously held at Barcode and the now-closed Lima Lounge. “We’re breaking it in, little by little,” Karagounis says. “You have to ease in the crowd.”

Soundcheck, 1420 K St. NW. 202-789-5429 www.soundcheckdc.com. Opens Aug. 12.

DUBTRIBE SOUND SYSTEM:

Dubtribe Sound System is a San Francisco based electronic musical group that produced and performed live worldwide between 1991 and 2005.

Dubtribe consisted of singers Sunshine Jones and Moonbeam Jones, but also included many sit in and on-tour musicians over the years. Originally born in a rent party, Dubtribe Sound System distinguished itself as performers by performing live for many hours, rather than replaying their recordings from DAT tapes or portable computers, and touring without stopping, often bringing their own sound, lights, and traveling family with them. But unlike its few counterparts in North America, Dubtribe would depart from the warehouse movement and establish itself in the mid-1990s as a grass-roots tour de force, refusing help, press, or money from any outside interests

Washington DC – Green Velvet 08.01.15 – U-hall

GREEN VELVET
Green Velvet (aka Cajmere) studied chemical engineering at the University of Illinois, where he exposed himself to the energetic culture and lifestyle of house. In 1991, midway though graduate school, Cajmere returned to Chicago to pursue his dream of producing house music.

In 1992, after surviving on cheese sandwiches and maximizing credit limits, Cajmere finally made an imprint on the dance community with his infectious experiment, “Coffee Pot” (It’s Time for the Percolator) – Clubhouse Records. Then he moved on to more complex musical and lyrical arrangements with songs like Lidell Townsell’s “Get With U” (Mercury Records).

The Cajmere and Dajae collaboration resulted in a #2 Billboard Dance Chart and International dance hit – “Brighter Days”. It was at this point that Cajmere decided to start Cajual Records. Having his own label gave Cajmere the autonomy to attain his goal of developing a sound that was representative of Chicago – thus, putting Chicago back on the map.

In 1993 Cajmere created Relief Records. The label became an outlet for he and other producers’ more track-oriented work.

The Relief label also gave birth to the experimental and eccentric, afro wig-wearing entity we know as Green Velvet – a Cajmere alter ego.

Green Velvet produced the first release on the Relief label, “Preacher Man.” He followed up the debut release with “Flash” and “The Stalker”, both of which brought about unexpected praise and worldwide recognition.

In 1997, Green Velvet’s attempt to combine 80s electronic funk with Chicago’s cult of a perfect track led to his creation, “Answering Machine” – with the more humorous but rather contagious hook – “I don’t need this shit!” For 1999 Green Velvet has crafted “Constant Chaos”, an electronic trip over a lyrical landscape or as Green Velvet muses in a recent Muzik interview, “I guess it’s sorta like folk music for the rave scene.”

☼ SGS | Season 4 | Episode 10 – WANKELMUT | SAEED YOUNAN | LEONARDO LEE

☼ SGS | Season 4 | Episode 10 – Louie Loco Bday Event

We have reached our half way mark to the season, and cannot THANK our FAMILY and FANS enough for getting us this far. Your boundless support to our Sundays only to lead to hungover Mondays is greatly appreciated. Come join us as we celebrate RITO LOCO’s own LOUIE LOCO’s BDAY here on the terrace. He was one of the original cofounders to SGS so we thought it proper to make this party even bigger with a Double Booking for all to enjoy.

– SAEED YOUNAN the original resident returns to our ROOFTOP. A guaranteed good time, just watching and listen to Saeed work a room and build momentum. As DJ Mag puts it “Saeed Younan is one of the few DJ’s that really know how to serve it up well”. No surprise why Carl Cox picks Saeed Younan as his go to DJ, for his Las Vegas residency and has invited him back for the 2nd year to play his arena in numerous festivals.

– Along side him will be Berlin’s new sensation WANKELMUT. Who became a global star almost overnight thanks to the release of his amazing ‘One Day/Reckoning Song’ remix. His name comes from a phrase which is rather unknown outside of Germany, it is actually a way to describe Yin & Yang, black & white, up & down etc. Opposite alternatives that seem to fit his open minded character very well and also be found in the way that he as DJ likes to touch a lots of different kinds of electronic dance music.

☼ We invite you back to something familiar, fun and for a great cause. SUNGLASS SUNDAYS, a locals rooftop party in the the heart of DC. Comprised of musicians, artist and locals in our community. A day for friends and family to enjoy some of the most premiere talent in the underground scene all working together as one.

☼ Once again we have teamed up with ONE SIGHT, http://www.onesight.org/na/donate/donate_eyewear/ A charity that takes donated sunglasses to recycle into prescription eyewear for children in need. So if you have a pair of sunglasses or eye glasses that are broken and old, bring them to help the less fortunate. Now we can enjoy a great day with amazing music and know that we are changing peoples lives.

[ WANKELMUT ]

For his 24th birthday, in December of 2011, the Berlin DJ Wankelmut aka Jacob Dilssner added his sound-cloud touch to his bootleg remix of Asaf Avidan. Under the name „Reckoning Song / One day“, the title conquered the charts and, according to the Media Control Single Charts, reached 1st place, and the double platinum status in Germany. The legendary remix was placed number one of Single Charts in eight European countries. It was the most downloaded track of Beatport 2012 and an Airplay Hit all over Europe. Looking back, 1,5 million Singles were sold, and it was played 150+ million times on Youtube.

Wankelmut, who had played until then in Underground Berlin Clubs, was widely booked within Europe. In particular the diversity of his entertaining music between Deep-House and Techno that Wankelmut presented as performing as a DJ, helped him to obtain a respected and recognized status within the German electronic music and the DJ industry. At the end of 2012 the famous Electronic Music Magazine GROOVE distinguished him as the „Newcomer of the year“.

During 2012 he developed a closed relationship with the renowned Berlin label „Get Physical Music“, with whom Wankelmut started in the fall of 2012 his own Mix-Compilation-Series „Wankelmoods“, and in January 2013 released his Club Single „My Head Is A Jungle“. Wankelmut obtained for this title the collaboration of the Australian singer and songwriter Emma Louise. With the remixes of Gui Boratto, Kasper Bjorke, Billon and Solee, this title was not only a Club-hit in Europe, but was also placed in the Top 20 of the Single Charts of many European countries. The „MK Remix“ of „My Head Is A Jungle“ done by the legendary US House producer Marc Kinchen was during the summer of 2013 one of the biggest hymns played on Ibiza, the support of Pete Tong and many other DJ´s provided for abundant Wankelmut fever within the UK and the USA. Since the track never went out of focus of media, Djs and listeners it entered the official UK Single Charts at #5 in August 2014.

In the second half of 2014 the Vol. 2 of the Wankelmoods Mix Compilation was released alongside another single “Wasted So Much Time” feat. the American singer John LaMonica, an active as a member of the group Robots Don´t Sleep. The original track and the great remixes by Kölsch, N´to and Kiwi made this release another club hit in the books of Wankelmut. Towards the end of 2014 Wankelmut started to do remixes again and has successfully reworked tracks by Lenny Kravitz, Röyksopp, Talisco, Karin Park, Hozier, The Writers Block and most recently he finished his great interpretation of “Down To Earth” by Flight Facilities.
In 2015 another full on Wankelmut single release will see the light of the day alongside extensive DJ touring all over the world.
